In recent years the concept of Joint Forest Management (JFM) has come to be accepted all over the country as a viable method for managing degraded public forest lands. The impetus that eventually led to JFM came from spontaneous experiments carried out by a few dedicated individuals in different parts of the country in the mid or late seventies. One of the most significant of these experiments originated in Haryana, in the now-famous village of Sukhomajri, just north of Chandigarh. The spectacular achievements in Sukhomajri caught eeryone's imagination, and as a consequence the Haryana Forest Department decided to take up the challenge of large scale replication.
