Nevertheless an attempt to produce a preliminary classification of the mangroves of India (about 3000 km2 of woody types) has been carried out in this paper. It is based on simple structural and floristic criteria. Most remaining mangroves are degraded or very degraded. However, the perception of the value of these ecosystems has changed and new technologies are implemented in order to control their evolution and uses, and to increase our scientific knowledge ER -
