The paper presents an overview of FAO's 1990 tropical forest resources assessment, covering 90 countries. The assessment was carried out in two phases: existing reliable data were used in the first and multitemporal remote-sensing sampling data in the second. The tropical forest cover was shown to be 1 756 million hectares in 1990 and had been 1 910 million hectares in 1980. Thus, average annual deforestation during the decade was 15.4 million hectares. The remote-sensing survey provides further information on processes of change including deforestation, forest degradation and forest fragmention. Special studies made as part of the assessment concern the current status of management, utilization and conservation of natural forests.
